Benefits of Training

People use firearms for various reasons, including self-defense, recreational target shooting, competition, in combat situations and for hunting. For any type of firearm use, it's important to have the proper training. Firearms training, which can include both classroom instruction and hands-on guidance has many important advantages, not the least of which is being able to use a gun safely.

I get questions from people all the time concerning why they need to train and prepare for their self defense.  The answer is really  quite simple.  A certain amount of training is required to qualify for a concealed handgun permit in Colorado.  But more important is the fact that a trained individual is a more prepared individual.

With crime being what it is, and budget cuts forcing law enforcement agencies to reduce staffing, there is a good chance that you will be on your own when a life threatening crime occurs.

That being said there are some real value adds to training.

Safety

Safety is the biggest advantage of firearms training. Everyone who learns how to use a gun becomes less likely to mishandle it or fire it negligently. Instruction reduces the likelihood of a tragic accident. Most firearms training courses include safety as a top priority, teaching students how to handle, clean, load and discharge a firearm in the proper fashion. All types of gun owners can benefit from basic safety training, even if they never plan to use their gun except for self-defense.

Accuracy

Another significant advantage of firearm training is improved accuracy. By learning proper stance, grip, and how to aim a pistol or rifle, students give themselves the best chance to hit their intended targets.

Defensible

Should you ever have to use a gun to defend yourself or family, having proper training will improve the odds that you will not only survive, but will be victorious.  The aftermath of a defensive shooting can be nearly as traumatic as the shooting itself, and will surely cost more.

Having proper training will prove beneficial in defending your decision to use your gun.  You will have the benefit of the training industry's expertise rather than a knee jerk reaction, and being able to articulate your decision can be the difference between freedom and life in prison.
